The term dunesbury has been around for as long as the English have been there, but the term has recently been coined by the National Park Service to describe the sand dunes that exist on the edge of the dunesbury-covered hills in the southern U.S. states of Alabama.
So how did the term “dunesbury” become a thing? It’s not as easy as just looking it up in a dictionary. In the past, dunesbury meant “a stretch of sand where the wind comes up from the ocean and blows away the dunes,” but now it’s being used more broadly to describe a particular group of sand dunes that are just so large that you can’t imagine them without the dunes.
With a little research, I ended up finding a reference in an article called “The Dunesbury Dilemma” by Paul H. Foster of the USGS, which describes dunesbury as the largest sand dune in the state of Alabama.
It does have a certain irony to it, does it not? After all, the dunes are the reason people go on holiday, and the dunesbury is the reason people go on holiday.
The dunesbury is actually a national park, so if you’re ever in Alabama, its the nearest you’re likely to be to a dune. However, it’s not always the dunes you have the most control over, and if you’re in a dune-infested area such as the dunesbury, you can be in for a rude awakening. Because the dunes are so tall and so wide, there are almost no places where you can hide out.
Well, its not like you cant hide out in the dunes. You just cant find another dune; its just too far apart to really cover up. You can hide behind a tree, and if you sit up tall, you can easily see the dunes. If you sit down, then you have even less visibility of the dunes.
You can always be found. As long as you’re not too close to the edge of the dune. The dunes are that tall and wide, so they’re always full of wind so your best bet is to sit up and just keep your body as far away from the dunes as possible. Also, keep your eyes open and nose out of the dune. The dunes are that big and there’s always going to be a windy place to hide.
If youre not careful, those dunes can be dangerous to your health as the wind can whip around your face and make you dizzy. It also makes it difficult to see and follow the wind as it blows around you. This is one of the reasons that one of the most common hazards for beachcombers is to be caught in a gust of wind and have your beachbag filled with sand.
Keep your eyes open, but remember that if you keep your nose out of the dune, you’ll never be able to follow the wind and see anything. If you want to try and get the sand out of your bag, do it before the wind picks up. Also, keep in mind that it is only really dangerous if the wind is coming towards you. If the wind is blowing away from you, the danger is much less.
Sand is everywhere around us. This is especially true in the dunes. The average person in the United States walks about 35 feet (11.8m) from the beach to the nearest dune. And even that is only 5% of the total.
